Programs

Learning in a Montessori school setting is in three-year cycles. The Casa or Primary program is the first cycle, which children attend from age 2 ½ or 3 to age 6; the second cycle is the Lower Elementary program for children age 6 to 9 and the third cycle is the Upper Elementary program, which children complete at age twelve. MMS class sizes are up to approximately 24 sudents, with a mix of boys and girls, and, for example, in a casa or elementary class, optimally there would be eight children at each age level.

Montessori education, and hence a MMS education, differs from the traditional public or independent school education: MMS special Montessori classroom materials assist in understanding; MMS emphasizes understanding from an early age, facilitating confidence; MMS children actively participate in learning, from a teacher sitting amongst them directing them through a curriculum; MMS encourages collaboration between students; MMS mixed-age groups enable older children to assist the younger, and begin to become leaders; MMS children learn at tables, enjoy classroom movement and discussion.

It is our goal at MMS to provide the best education for each child, which includes achieving one’s potential; developing independence and confidence in one’s abilities; developing a curiosity and interest in learning; developing strong and efficient work habits; developing good social and interpersonal skills, forming a moral standard and strength of character and gaining the knowledge relevant to the child’s stage of development. As Dr. Montessori said, “Education is an aid to life”.

During the Elementary years, the Canadian Achievement Test (CAT) is administered to students in grades 3 and 6, and the teachers ensure that the students undertake any work necessary to fill any knowledge gaps revealed by the test.

Students at all three campuses have access to well-stocked libraries within the School facilities or nearby local libraries for assistance with projects and learning basic research techniques. The books have been purchased by the School or contributed by students, parents and alumni.
