Why Outdoor Education?

"When children come into contact with nature, they reveal their strength."

- Maria Montessori

Our Outdoor Education program (6 to 14 years) is truly unique. We know that being outside and developing a connection to the land we inhabit deepens a student's understanding of the world, their academic pursuits, and themselves. There are vast, meaningful academic, social, and emotional benefits to taking our classrooms outdoors.

As with our Montessori, our Outdoor Education teachers are experts in their field and guide their students, in tandem with their classroom teacher, through transformational learning experiences throughout the year. This includes hikes through local ravines and parks, supporting a neighbourhood community fridge, and outdoor skills building and indigenous learning workshops. It includes bike safety and city riding courses; 2 night and 6 night camp and canoe trips; student led travel on foot and public transportation.

“Only through freedom and environmental experience is it practically possible for human development to occur.”

- Maria Montessori

Children learn about the geography of their environment, the history of the spaces they occupy, the communities they live in and contribute to. In Montessori we call this the Pedagogy of Place and it guides each individual to further understand how they fit into the world. Learning through experience together in the real world inspires enormous curiosity and compassion that they bring back to their classroom work.

Students also reap the emotional and physical rewards of nature such as self-regulation, risk-assessment, self-confidence, strength, coordination and endurance, as they involve their whole bodies in their learning.

Our goal is transformational. Our students learn to be stewards of the environment and will tackle the problems that will change our world.
